IT Example
We offer a set of configurations which certainly includes the solution
that fits best your needs.
You may need just a small Internet gateway which offers more than a common
router with some firewalling functionality. You may want to combine it
with some other functionality, like file-server, etc.
Yes, security people don't like "extra" functionality on the firewall, which is
not related to gateway functionality. There are good reasons for this.
But, budgets may require such economic solutions.
If your budgets allows, you want to have a separate machine for the firewall.
And even a Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) to put machines that offer functionality
related to the Internet, then a second firewall to your intranet.
But let's look at sketches of these setups.
This is a somewhat standart solution.
There are two zones, the unsafe Internet and the protected intranet.
A dedicated machine serves as firewall.
The mail server, external web-server and other server are in the intranet.
In this example ADSL over ISDN is used to connect to the ISP.
This is a somewhat more sufisticated solution.
There are three zones, the unsafe Internet, the protected intranet and a DMZ
inbetween.
A dedicated machine serves as firewall, one on either side of the DMZ.
The external web-server and possibly other server that serve Internet services
are in the DMZ.
In the intranet are placed only internal server, no external services
are served here.
In this example ADSL over ISDN is used to connect to the ISP.
This is an economic solution.
There are two zones, the unsafe Internet and the protected intranet.
The machine that serves as gateway also serves the other needs,
mail, file, web and other server.
Not very nice but it gives you more options than a simple modem-gateway/router.
In this example ADSL over ISDN is used to connect to the ISP.
